What this tool does
Compute MD5 / SHA-1 / SHA-256 / SHA-384 / SHA-512 of a file inside your browser — useful for verifying downloads or comparing two copies of the same file.
Bytes never leave your device. The output follows the classic sha256sum format (algorithm, hex, filename) so it can be diffed against command-line output.
How to use
- Drop your file into the area above Any file type, one file at a time, up to 200MB.
- Tick the algorithms you need Multiple selections are allowed. MD5 is fastest but no longer collision-resistant; SHA-256 is the current recommendation; SHA-1 is no longer collision-resistant.
- Copy or download the result Copy the result with one click, or download it as a text file.
FAQ
MD5 is broken — why do you still offer it?
MD5 is still acceptable for non-adversarial uses like verifying downloads and checking two files are identical. For security-sensitive use cases, pick SHA-256.
Is my file uploaded?
No. All computation happens inside your browser; the server only serves the page.
Can I diff the result against command-line sha256sum?
Yes. The format is <ALG> <hex> <filename>, matching GNU coreutils and diffable verbatim.
Why are large files slow?
Browser SubtleCrypto has to load the entire file into memory before hashing — there is no chunked API. A 200MB file takes around 30 seconds, which is a browser API limitation rather than a tool issue.
What about files larger than 200MB?
For larger files, prefer command-line tools like openssl dgst or sha256sum, which handle arbitrary sizes.
Limits
Up to 200MB per file, one file at a time; no streamed incremental hashing (SubtleCrypto does not support it).
No HMAC or salted hashing; no file diffing — the tool only fingerprints a single file.
