What this tool does
EPUB-to-Markdown turns an eBook into editable, version-controllable, notes-ready plain text: heading levels, bold/italic, lists, quotes and links all map to their Markdown equivalents, with chapters concatenated in reading order into a single .md file.
Typical uses: importing highlights and chapters into Obsidian or Notion; serializing a technical book as blog posts; or turning a company manual from "readable only in an app" into "editable by everyone". Conversion runs entirely in your browser.
How to use
- Drop the EPUB Standard DRM-free EPUBs are supported; DRM-encrypted books are clearly rejected — that is rights protection, not a format issue.
- Choose chapter handling "Prepend chapter titles" adds a level-1 heading at each chapter start (skipped if the content already has one); "chapter separator" inserts --- between chapters.
- Import into your notes The output is a single .md file — drag it into Obsidian or Typora; images are marked with placeholders (eBook images are not exported by default).
FAQ
Can DRM-locked Kindle books be converted?
No. Encrypted EPUBs are rejected outright. Use files you legitimately hold DRM-free; stripping DRM is neither within this tool's capability nor its stance.
Are images exported too?
Not by default — image spots are marked with placeholders. Bundling image assets alongside the .md is a separate tool scenario.
What happens to tables?
They degrade to plain text (cell content kept, structure lost). MD table syntax cannot express complex tables — readable text beats broken syntax.
This or EPUB-to-TXT?
For notes/editing, use this tool (structure kept); for plain archives or full-text search, use the TXT converter (cleaner and smaller).
Can chapter order get scrambled?
No. Order strictly follows the OPF spine — the same order readers display, and the only order this converter honors.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in a browser Worker; the file never leaves your device.
Limits
Standard DRM-free EPUB only; no MOBI / AZW3.
Images are not exported (placeholders only); tables degrade to text; footnotes and multimedia are not mapped.
Output is a single .md file; up to 50MB per file.
